Integrated MBA / IPM (5-year Integrated Programme in Management, BBA+MBA)
About Integrated MBA / IPM (5-year Integrated Programme in Management, BBA+MBA)
The Integrated Programme in Management compresses the BBA-then-MBA journey into a single five-year commitment made straight after Class 12. IIM Indore pioneered the format in 2011 — the first programme of its kind in India — and it has since spread to IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, IIM Shillong and a number of private universities (NMIMS, Nirma, Symbiosis's equivalent structures). At IIM Indore, students completing all five years receive a dual award — an undergraduate degree in management foundations plus the MBA — and those in the newer IIM IPMs similarly graduate with a bachelor's-plus-MBA combination. Students merging into the MBA years join, and place alongside, the regular PGP/MBA cohort.
The first three years blend management foundations with a liberal-arts-style base — mathematics, statistics, economics, psychology, sociology, communication — before the final two years deliver the full MBA core and electives. Most IIM IPMs allow an exit after three years with the undergraduate degree for students who change course. The economic logic is compelling for the committed: entry is via a Class 12-level aptitude test (IPMAT/JIPMAT) that is far less competitive than beating 2.5+ lakh CAT aspirants later, and it guarantees the IIM MBA years without re-testing.
The trade-off is optionality: a 17-year-old locks in a management career before experiencing any other discipline, and fees across five years at an IIM are substantial (indicatively ₹30-40 lakh in total, with the last two years billed at prevailing PGP rates). Selectivity is extreme — IIM Indore admits roughly 150 students from tens of thousands of applicants. For school leavers who are certain about business careers and can clear the aptitude bar, the IPM is arguably the single most efficient route to a top-tier Indian MBA.
Eligibility
Class 12 (10+2) pass in any stream, generally with 60% aggregate for IIM IPM programmes (55% for SC/ST/PwD; criteria and age limits vary by institute and year — IIM Indore has historically expected Mathematics at Class 12 level for its quantitative rigour). Private universities admitting to integrated MBAs typically ask for 50-60%.
Admission process
IPMAT (IIM Indore's IPM Aptitude Test, also used by IIM Ranchi with its own process) or JIPMAT (conducted by NTA for IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu) → shortlist → personal interview (and written ability test where applicable). IIM Rohtak conducts its own IPM aptitude test. Private universities use SET, NPAT, CUET or institute exams for their integrated programmes.

Frequently asked questions about Integrated MBA / IPM
Can I really join an IIM straight after Class 12?
Yes — the five-year IPM admits students right after Class 12 through IPMAT (IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak run their own versions) or JIPMAT (NTA, for IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu), followed by an interview. IIM Indore pioneered the format in 2011, and several IIMs now run it.
IPMAT or JIPMAT — which exam do I need?
It depends on the target IIM: IIM Indore's IPMAT covers IIM Indore and is used by several other IIMs (including Ranchi and Shillong) with their own selection processes; IIM Rohtak conducts its own IPM aptitude test; and JIPMAT, conducted by the NTA, serves IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu. Ambitious aspirants typically take more than one.
Can I exit the IPM midway if I change my mind?
Most IIM IPMs allow an exit after three years with the undergraduate degree, so the MBA years are not an irreversible lock-in. Completing all five years earns the dual award — the undergraduate degree plus the MBA.
Is the IPM route easier than writing CAT after graduation?
The entry test is pitched at Class 12 aptitude level and avoids competing with 2.5-3 lakh CAT aspirants later, but selectivity is still extreme — IIM Indore admits roughly 150 students from tens of thousands of applicants. It is less brutal than CAT arithmetic-wise, not an easy back door.
Do IPM graduates get the same placements as regular IIM MBA students?
Yes. IPM students merge into the regular PGP/MBA cohort for the final two years and sit in the same placement process, recruited by the same consulting, banking and product companies at the same packages.
