IOAAInternational Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics
About IOAA
The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, held annually since 2007, is unique among the science olympiads in examining three distinct skill sets: theoretical astrophysics, statistical analysis of real astronomical data, and hands-on observation of the night sky. Its weighting — roughly half theory, a quarter each for data analysis and observation — rewards genuinely rounded astronomers.
India, a founding force of the olympiad through HBCSE, consistently ranks among the top countries. The team is selected through NSEA each November, the Indian National Astronomy Olympiad, and the Orientation-cum-Selection Camp, where students train on telescopes and planetarium simulations before the final squad is named.
Accepted by: Medals are internationally recognised in physics and astronomy admissions; India is among the strongest nations at IOAA and team selection is a major distinction

Secondary-school students per IOAA regulations; India’s team is selected via NSEA → INAO → OCSC Astronomy
IOAA exam pattern
Sections
- Theoretical examination (about 5 hours) — roughly 50% of the total score
- Data-analysis examination — roughly 25% of the total score
- Observational examination (night-sky and/or planetarium tasks) — roughly 25% of the total score
Marking scheme: None (step-marked solutions)
IOAA syllabus outline
- Celestial mechanics, stellar and galactic astrophysics, cosmology, coordinate systems and observational techniques
- Physics and mathematics at senior-secondary level applied to astronomical problems; real telescope and sky-recognition skills for the observational round
- India’s route: NSEA (IAPT, November) → INAO (Jan–Feb) → OCSC Astronomy camp → national team
Preparing for IOAA?
Olympiads reward deep fundamentals — the same preparation that pays off later in JEE, NEET and other entrance exams. Explore every national and international olympiad, or check the official site for this year's dates and registration.
