Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)
About Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)
The B.Com is the default degree of Indian commerce and one of the most enrolled undergraduate programmes in the country. Over three years (or four, under the National Education Policy 2020's flexible undergraduate structure) it builds the core toolkit of business: financial and corporate accounting, business and corporate law, income tax and GST, cost accounting, economics, business statistics, auditing and financial management. The honours variant (B.Com Hons) goes deeper into the same territory and is the more competitive admission at flagship colleges, while the programme/pass variant offers a broader, lighter mix.
Admission mechanics changed materially in 2022 when central universities moved to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency. Delhi University — home to the most sought-after commerce colleges in India, several of which sit at the very top of the NIRF College rankings — admits B.Com and B.Com (Hons) students through CUET-UG scores followed by its Common Seat Allocation System. Most state universities and private colleges, however, continue to admit on Class 12 marks, so a strong board result remains the widest door into the degree.
What makes the B.Com strategically valuable is how well it stacks with other qualifications. It is the natural academic base for CA, CS and CMA — large numbers of students pursue a professional course in parallel with the degree, and all three institutes offer graduates direct entry to their intermediate/executive levels. It also feeds the MBA pipeline (via CAT, XAT, CMAT and similar tests), M.Com and specialized master programmes in finance, analytics and economics, and government-job examinations from banking (IBPS/SBI) to SSC and state services where a bachelor degree is the baseline requirement.
Eligibility
10+2 in any recognized board; commerce subjects preferred and some universities/colleges require Mathematics or Accountancy for the honours track
Admission process
CUET-UG (NTA) followed by the university's counselling for central universities such as Delhi University (CSAS portal); Class 12 merit or institutional processes at most state and private universities

Frequently asked questions about Bachelor of Commerce
Is Mathematics compulsory for B.Com?
Not universally. Most universities admit students without Class 12 Mathematics into B.Com (programme), but several — and many flagship honours programmes — require or prefer Mathematics or Accountancy. Check the specific college’s subject-eligibility rules before applying.
Is CUET-UG compulsory for B.Com admission?
Only for central universities such as Delhi University, BHU and Jamia, which admit through CUET-UG scores followed by their own counselling. Most state universities and private colleges still admit on Class 12 merit or their own processes, so you can join a B.Com without ever taking CUET.
What is the difference between B.Com and B.Com (Hons)?
B.Com (Hons) studies the discipline in greater depth with more specialized papers and is the more competitive admission at top colleges; the pass/programme B.Com offers a broader, lighter spread. Recruiters and postgraduate programmes generally treat honours as the stronger signal, though both carry identical eligibility for CA/CS/CMA direct entry and government exams.
Can I pursue CA along with B.Com?
Yes — it is one of the most common combinations in Indian commerce education. Students typically clear CA Foundation around Class 12/first year, study for CA Intermediate alongside the degree, and begin articleship as the degree winds down. ICAI’s direct-entry route also lets commerce graduates with 55% (others 60%) skip Foundation entirely.
