MATManagement Aptitude Test
About MAT
MAT, run by the All India Management Association since 1988, is India's most flexible and frequent MBA entrance test. It is held four times a year — February, May, September and December — in a choice of paper-based, centre-based computer and remote internet-based modes, and AIMA even allows candidates to attempt two modes in the same window and forward the better score. This makes MAT the natural fallback exam: candidates who miss or underperform in CAT/XAT season retain multiple admission chances through the year, with scores valid for one year.
The current pattern has 150 questions across five sections of 30 each in 120 minutes, with -0.25 negative marking. The composite score (reported on a scale that runs to roughly 800) is computed from four sections — the Economic & Business Environment section is reported separately and does not affect the composite, so aptitude preparation should prioritize the language, reasoning, mathematics and data sections. Difficulty is markedly lower than CAT or XAT, and competitive percentiles are correspondingly attainable with shorter preparation.
MAT's acceptance is broad but concentrated in mid-tier institutions — several hundred AICTE-approved schools use it, though almost none of the top-30 B-schools do. It is best suited to candidates targeting regional and emerging B-schools, working professionals seeking a convenient window, and those using it as insurance alongside CAT/CMAT. As with any wide-acceptance exam, the value of admission depends entirely on the specific institute's accreditation and placement record.
Accepted by: Several hundred AICTE-approved and university B-schools across India, largely in the mid tier — AIMA states 600+ institutes have used MAT scores; scores are valid for one year
