Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed)
About Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed)
The B.P.Ed is the NCTE-regulated professional degree for physical education teaching — the qualification behind the PET/PTI (physical education teacher) posts in schools. Reformatted as a two-year, four-semester programme under the NCTE Regulations of 2014, it is a graduate-entry degree with a distinctive eligibility ladder that rewards sporting achievement: a bachelor’s degree with 50% marks plus recognized sports participation qualifies, and the marks bar relaxes to 45% for candidates with a physical education degree, physical education as a degree subject, or higher-level competitive sports participation.
The curriculum runs on two tracks: theory — anatomy and exercise physiology, kinesiology and biomechanics, sports psychology, health education, sports training methodology, and management of physical education — and extensive practicum covering track and field, major games, yoga, gymnastics and officiating, plus teaching practice in schools. Admission processes usually add a physical efficiency test to the written exam, so fitness itself is an entry requirement.
Graduates most commonly become physical education teachers in schools (government PET/TGT-PE posts require the relevant TET/recruitment exams where applicable), sports coaches, and fitness and wellness professionals. The M.P.Ed opens college-level teaching and sports administration, and public-sector avenues include the Sports Authority of India ecosystem, state sports departments and sports quotas in other services.
