Master of Education (M.Ed)
About Master of Education (M.Ed)
The M.Ed is the professional master’s degree in education — the qualification that turns teachers into teacher educators. Regulated by the NCTE, the two-year programme (extended from one year by the 2014 regulations) deepens the theoretical core of education studies — philosophy, sociology and psychology of education, curriculum studies, educational research — and requires a dissertation, giving graduates their first sustained research experience. Specialization tracks typically cover elementary or secondary education, educational administration, curriculum and pedagogy.
Its primary career destination is the teacher education system itself: lecturer and assistant professor posts in B.Ed and D.El.Ed colleges, DIETs, Institutes of Advanced Study in Education and university departments of education. University-level appointments additionally require clearing UGC NET in Education (or holding a PhD), so serious academic aspirants should plan the M.Ed as the step before NET/PhD rather than the final degree. Outside academia, M.Ed holders work in curriculum development bodies (SCERTs, NCERT ecosystem roles), examination boards, education NGOs, school leadership and education policy and research organizations.
Admission generally requires a B.Ed or an equivalent NCTE-recognized qualification with 50% marks; universities run their own entrance tests and several central universities fill M.Ed seats through CUET (PG). The degree pairs naturally with experience — many candidates return to it after a few years of school teaching to move into leadership, teacher training or research roles.
