Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP)
About Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP)
The ITEP is the NEP 2020 flagship reform in teacher education: a four-year dual-major undergraduate programme, notified by the NCTE in October 2021 and launched in pilot mode from the 2023–24 academic session in 57 central and state government universities and institutions. Students earn a disciplinary major and an education degree together — B.A. B.Ed, B.Sc. B.Ed or B.Com. B.Ed — saving a full year compared with the conventional route of a three-year bachelor’s degree followed by a two-year B.Ed.
The programme is designed around the NEP’s new 5+3+3+4 school structure, preparing teachers specifically for the foundational, preparatory, middle and secondary stages rather than the older primary/secondary split. The curriculum blends subject-matter study with education theory, pedagogy and extensive supervised school practice. Its strategic importance is spelled out in the policy itself: NEP 2020 envisages that by 2030 the four-year integrated B.Ed offered by multidisciplinary institutions will become the minimum degree qualification for school teachers, which makes the ITEP the forward-looking route for students who decide on teaching early.
Entry is through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET), run by the National Testing Agency, which opens the programme to Class 12 graduates by choice — a deliberate shift from teaching being a fallback taken up after another degree. The pilot cohort of institutions includes IITs, NITs, the Regional Institutes of Education (RIEs) of NCERT and reputed central and state universities, and the NCTE has been expanding recognition to more institutions in phases. As with all teacher education, only NCTE-recognized ITEP institutions award a valid qualification, and graduates seeking government school posts must still clear the applicable Teacher Eligibility Test.
Eligibility
Class 12 (10+2) pass or appearing, from a recognized board; admission through the NTA-conducted NCET, with institution-specific criteria applying at counselling
Admission process
National Common Entrance Test (NCET), a computer-based test conducted by the NTA on behalf of the NCTE, followed by counselling at the participating central/state universities and institutions (including IITs, NITs, RIEs and government colleges)
Eligibility at a glance

Frequently asked questions about Integrated Teacher Education Programme
How is ITEP different from doing B.A./B.Sc. and then B.Ed?
The ITEP compresses the 3+2 route into four years, awarding the disciplinary degree and the education degree together (B.A. B.Ed, B.Sc. B.Ed or B.Com. B.Ed). It is also purpose-built for the NEP 5+3+3+4 school stages, whereas the two-year B.Ed follows a bachelor’s degree in a separate discipline.
Which institutions offer the ITEP?
The programme launched in pilot mode from 2023–24 across 57 central and state government universities and institutions — including IITs, NITs, NCERT’s Regional Institutes of Education and government colleges — with the NCTE recognizing more institutions in phases. Admission to all of them is through the NTA’s NCET.
Does finishing the ITEP guarantee a teaching job?
No degree does. The ITEP makes you academically qualified a year earlier than the conventional route, but government school appointments still require clearing CTET or a state TET and the recruiting body’s selection process.
