Bachelor of Arts (BA)
About Bachelor of Arts (BA)
The BA is India's most-enrolled degree — about 1.13 crore students, or a third of all undergraduates, per AISHE 2021-22 — and the standard academic foundation of the humanities and social sciences. Students build the degree around one or two major subjects such as history, political science, economics, English, psychology, sociology, geography or a language, combined with minor and multidisciplinary courses. Under the UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes (2022), the syllabus also weaves in ability-enhancement (language and communication), skill-enhancement and value-added courses, so the degree is broader than the old single-track BA.
The NEP 2020 restructuring matters most at the exit points. The four-year undergraduate programme carries multiple entry and exit options: a UG certificate after the first year and a UG diploma after the second (with prescribed credits), the familiar three-year BA at the end of year three, and a four-year BA (Honours) worth 160 credits at the end of year four. Students who maintain 75% or above through the first six semesters can choose the research stream in the fourth year and graduate with BA (Honours with Research) — a route the UGC PhD Regulations 2022 reward by letting four-year graduates with 75% apply directly to PhD programmes. Graduates of the four-year degree also qualify for the new one-year MA.
Admission is now a two-track system. Central universities — Delhi University, BHU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Allahabad and the rest — fill BA seats through CUET-UG, and Delhi's top-ranked colleges (Hindu, Miranda House, Hans Raj, Kirori Mal, St. Stephen's) are the most competitive arts destinations in the country. Most state universities and their affiliated colleges, which teach the bulk of India's BA students, still admit on Class 12 marks. Because eligibility is 10+2 in any stream, the BA is genuinely open: science students routinely switch in for psychology, economics or civil-services preparation.
The degree is best understood as a launchpad rather than a terminal qualification. It is the classic base for the UPSC Civil Services and state PSC examinations, for an MA and the NET-to-academia route, for B.Ed and school teaching, for law (via three-year LLB), journalism, management (via MBA entrances, which accept any graduate) and the content, communications and social-sector job markets. Starting salaries in generalist roles are modest, but the ceiling depends almost entirely on the postgraduate or professional layer added on top.
Eligibility
10+2 in any stream (arts, science or commerce) from a recognized board; cut-offs vary by college — central universities admit through CUET-UG, most state universities and affiliated colleges through Class 12 merit
Admission process
CUET-UG followed by centralized counselling (e.g. the University of Delhi CSAS) for central and participating universities; direct merit-based admission on 10+2 marks at most state universities and affiliated colleges; a few institutions run their own entrance tests
Eligibility at a glance
| Qualification | 10+2 (Class 12) in any stream — arts, science or commerce — from a recognized board |
|---|---|
| Minimum marks | A pass in Class 12 satisfies baseline eligibility; individual universities and colleges apply their own cut-offs (typically 45–50% for general admission, far higher effective cut-offs at top CUET-based colleges) |
| Required subjects | No stream-specific subjects requiredSome honours programmes prefer or require the subject (or a related one) at 10+2 — e.g. mathematics for BA (Hons) Economics at several universities |
| Entrance requirement | CUET-UG score for central and participating universities; Class 12 merit elsewhere |
- The NEP 2020 four-year programme allows exit with a certificate (1 year), diploma (2 years), degree (3 years) or honours degree (4 years, 160 credits)
- Honours with Research in the 4th year requires 75% or above in the first six semesters
- Re-entry after an early exit is permitted within three years, with the degree to be completed within seven

Frequently asked questions about Bachelor of Arts
Is the BA now 3 years or 4 years?
Both. Under the UGC's NEP 2020 curriculum framework, the undergraduate programme runs four years with multiple exit points: you can leave with a standard BA after three years, or continue to a fourth year for BA (Honours) — and BA (Honours with Research) if you scored 75% or above in the first six semesters. Many state universities are still transitioning, so check what your target university currently offers.
Can a science or commerce student do a BA?
Yes. BA eligibility is 10+2 in any stream, so science and commerce students can switch without restriction. A few honours programmes prefer related 10+2 subjects — mathematics for economics honours is the common example — but the stream itself is open to everyone.
Is CUET compulsory for BA admission?
Only for central universities (Delhi University, BHU, Jamia, Allahabad and others) and the state, deemed and private universities that have opted in — these admit exclusively through CUET-UG. The majority of state universities and their affiliated colleges, which teach most BA students in India, still admit on Class 12 merit.
Which BA subjects help with UPSC preparation?
History, political science, geography, economics, sociology and philosophy map directly onto the UPSC General Studies syllabus, and all of them are popular optional papers. A BA in these subjects effectively lets you study your exam syllabus for a degree — one reason the stream remains the classic civil-services route.
