Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
About Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
The BFA — also awarded as BVA (Bachelor of Visual Arts) at some universities — is the professional studio degree of the visual arts. Indian programmes typically run four years, with a preparatory first year covering drawing, colour, design fundamentals and art history before students commit to a specialization such as painting, sculpture, applied art (commercial/graphic art), printmaking or photography from the second year onward. Performance disciplines like acting, dance and music sit in the separate Bachelor of Performing Arts (BPA) family rather than the BFA.
Unlike the lecture-driven BA, the BFA is assessed largely through studio practice: submissions, juried displays and a final-year exhibition or portfolio. Historic public art schools — Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, the Faculty of Fine Arts at MSU Baroda, the College of Art in Delhi, Kala Bhavana at Visva-Bharati and the government colleges of art and craft in Kolkata and Chennai — anchor the discipline, alongside newer university departments and private design schools. Admission almost everywhere hinges on a practical aptitude test or portfolio, and where a central university is involved, CUET-UG may sit alongside that practical component.
Career-wise, the BFA feeds both the traditional art world and the much larger commercial creative economy. Applied-art and visual-communication graduates move into advertising, branding, illustration, UI/visual design, animation, gaming and publishing; painting and sculpture graduates build gallery practices, take commissions and teach; and an MFA plus NET opens the academic track. Freelancing is common early on, so incomes are more variable than in salaried streams — the figures below are indicative ranges only.
Eligibility
10+2 in any stream from a recognized board (typically 45–50% aggregate); most institutions additionally require an aptitude/practical test or a portfolio review
Admission process
Institution-level admission built around a studio aptitude test and/or portfolio plus interview (e.g. Delhi University's College of Art, Faculty of Fine Arts at MSU Baroda, Sir J.J. School of Art); central universities offering BFA may use CUET-UG alongside their practical assessments
