PhD (Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences)
About PhD (Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences)
The PhD is the research apex of the arts stream — an original contribution to knowledge in disciplines ranging from history, political science and economics to literature, linguistics, philosophy, sociology and fine arts. The governing framework is the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, notified in November 2022: coursework (including research methodology and publication ethics) is compulsory, the programme runs a minimum of three years including that coursework, and the outer limit is six years, with re-registration and category-specific relaxations defined in the regulations. The 2022 regulations also discontinued the M.Phil as an admission pathway for new entrants.
Two eligibility doors exist. The traditional route is a master's degree with 55% (50% with category relaxation); the NEP-era route admits graduates of the four-year bachelor's programme who scored 75% or above, without requiring an MA first. Admission itself runs either through UGC NET — the UGC has directed that NET scores be used for PhD admissions, and NET-JRF qualifiers carry a monthly research fellowship into the programme — or through a university's own entrance test and interview, with weightages set out in the regulations. Central universities such as JNU, DU, BHU and the IITs' humanities departments are the most sought-after doctoral destinations in the field.
A humanities PhD leads primarily to academia: assistant professorships (where a PhD is increasingly decisive alongside NET), postdoctoral fellowships and research positions at institutes and archives. Beyond the university, doctorate holders work in policy research, think tanks, publishing, cultural institutions, and international organizations. Academic salaries follow UGC pay scales, so the financial arc is standardized; the real variable is the research profile built during and after the doctorate.
Eligibility
Master's degree with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/differently-abled candidates), or a 4-year bachelor's degree with at least 75% marks or equivalent grade, under the UGC PhD Regulations 2022
Admission process
Through UGC NET (whose scores universities use for PhD admission, with NET-JRF qualifiers also receiving a research fellowship) or a university-conducted entrance test plus interview/viva, as provided in the UGC PhD Regulations 2022; supervisors and seats are allotted after admission
