Interior Design (B.Des/B.Sc/Diploma)
About Interior Design (B.Des/B.Sc/Diploma)
Interior design is the art and science of shaping building interiors — planning space, light, acoustics, materials, furniture and services so that homes, offices, retail stores, hotels and healthcare facilities are functional, safe, code-compliant and pleasant to inhabit. It is distinct from interior decoration (styling and furnishing an existing space) in that designers engage with space planning, technical drawings, building services and site execution; it also differs from architecture, which is a licensed profession under the Council of Architecture — interior design in India carries no such statutory licence, so portfolios and institute reputation carry the weight.
Formal routes into the field include the B.Des with furniture/interior specialization (NID offers a furniture-and-interior-design discipline; NIFT added a Fashion Interiors specialization to its B.Des), B.Sc Interior Design programmes at universities, and a large diploma ecosystem. Coursework covers design studios, technical drawing and CAD/BIM, materials and construction, lighting and acoustics, furniture design, estimation and professional practice, with internships in design firms or with architects.
Demand rides India's real-estate, retail and hospitality cycles: residential design and modular-interiors companies, corporate workplace-design firms, hotel and restaurant projects, retail chains and set design all hire steadily, and tech-enabled home-interiors platforms have added an organized-sector employment layer to what was traditionally a practice-led profession. Independent practice after a few years of experience is the most common long-term trajectory.
Eligibility
Class 12 (10+2) in any stream for degree programmes; diploma routes accept Class 10/12 depending on the institute — no statutory licence is required to practise interior design in India
Admission process
NID DAT (its furniture-and-interior-oriented B.Des discipline), the NIFT entrance for the Fashion Interiors specialization, UCEED where accepted by participating universities, and institute-level aptitude tests at private design schools and architecture-affiliated colleges
