FMGEForeign Medical Graduate Examination (Screening Test)
About FMGE
The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination is a screening test that Indian citizens and OCIs who obtained their primary medical qualification abroad must clear before they can register and practise medicine in India. It is conducted by NBEMS twice a year in a computer-based format.
The exam has 300 multiple-choice questions for 300 marks, split into two parts of three sections each, with one mark per correct answer and no negative marking. A candidate must score at least 150 out of 300 (50%) to pass, with no category-based relaxation of the qualifying threshold.
FMGE serves as a quality gate to ensure foreign-trained graduates meet the Indian standard of medical competence. It is planned to eventually be replaced by the licensing component of the National Exit Test (NExT); until NExT is operational, FMGE remains the required licensure screening exam for foreign graduates.
Accepted by: Mandatory screening test for foreign medical graduates to obtain registration with the NMC or a State Medical Council and practise modern medicine in India
