About JEE Advanced
JEE Advanced is the second and decisive stage of the joint entrance system and is widely regarded as one of the most demanding undergraduate entrance examinations in the world. It is organised each year by one of the seven older IITs on rotation and consists of two compulsory computer-based papers, each three hours long, held on the same day. Both papers test Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, but unlike JEE Main the paper pattern is deliberately unpredictable — the mix of single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical and matching questions, the marking scheme, and even the total marks change from year to year, rewarding genuine conceptual mastery over pattern practice.
Eligibility is tightly controlled: only the top ~2.5 lakh JEE Main scorers of that year may register, each candidate gets at most two attempts in consecutive years, and board-performance criteria (75% aggregate or top 20 percentile) apply at the admission stage. Ranks from the exam feed the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), which allots seats at the 23 IITs alongside the JEE Main-based institutes; IISc Bengaluru and a handful of other research institutions also admit against JEE Advanced ranks. Candidates aspiring to B.Arch at the IITs that offer it must additionally clear the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT).
Preparation typically spans two years alongside Class 11–12 and focuses on multi-step problem solving rather than recall. Given roughly 19,000–20,000 seats against 2.5 lakh eligible candidates, the selection ratio is severe; a sensible strategy treats JEE Main institutes, state CETs and private-university exams as parallel options rather than fallbacks.

Candidates must rank among approximately the top 2,50,000 scorers (across categories) in JEE Main Paper 1 of the same year. A maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years is allowed. An age cap applies for general candidates (roughly 25 years, defined by a rolling date-of-birth cutoff) with a five-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD candidates. Candidates must have appeared for Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the qualifying window, must meet the 75% aggregate (65% SC/ST) or top-20-percentile board criterion for admission, and must not have previously accepted an IIT seat.
