RMORegional Mathematical Olympiad (merged into IOQM since 2020–21)
About RMO
The Regional Mathematical Olympiad was for decades the regional filter of India’s mathematical olympiad programme: each region set or administered a three-hour, six-problem subjective paper, and its toppers earned a seat at the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. It rewarded rigorous written proofs rather than quick objective answers, making it many students’ first encounter with real olympiad mathematics.
RMO no longer exists as a separate exam. In the restructuring announced for the 2020–21 cycle, the PRMO and RMO stages were merged into the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM), conducted by the Mathematics Teachers’ Association (India). The entry is retained here because older guides still cite RMO — aspirants should register for IOQM instead.
Accepted by: Historically, regional toppers qualified for INMO; today the equivalent qualification runs through IOQM

RMO exam pattern
Sections

Marking scheme: None (fully subjective, proof-based answers)
RMO syllabus outline
- Number theory, algebra, geometry and combinatorics at pre-college olympiad level
- RMO sat between the school-level PRMO and the national INMO in the pre-2020 five-stage structure
- From the 2020–21 cycle, PRMO and RMO were combined into the single IOQM stage — students seeking this pathway should now register for IOQM
