About NSEC

NSEC is the chemistry paper of the National Standard Examinations and the first of the five stages that select India’s team for the International Chemistry Olympiad. It is held every November alongside the other NSE papers at IAPT-registered centres nationwide, and it is the only recognised entry point into the government-backed chemistry olympiad cycle.

The paper is a two-hour objective test pitched noticeably above board level: expect rigorous physical-chemistry numericals, mechanism-based organic questions and applied inorganic chemistry. Students who clear the subject-wise cut-offs move to INChO at HBCSE in late January or February, from where the best performers are invited to the Orientation-cum-Selection Camp in Mumbai.

Accepted by: Top NSEC scorers qualify for the Indian National Chemistry Olympiad (INChO) at HBCSE, the pathway to India’s four-member IChO team
