BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
About BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
BHMS is the undergraduate degree in homoeopathy. Its 5.5-year structure pairs 4.5 years of academic study with a one-year internship of supervised clinical practice. Students learn the philosophy and principles of homoeopathy alongside foundational modern medical sciences so they can diagnose using conventional methods while treating with homoeopathic remedies.
The curriculum spans Organon of Medicine and Homoeopathic Philosophy, Homoeopathic Materia Medica, Homoeopathic Pharmacy and Repertory, together with Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, Pathology and Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, and the practice of medicine, surgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology as applied to homoeopathic practice.
After registering with the State Board or NCH, graduates can practise homoeopathy, run clinics, join homoeopathic hospitals and dispensaries, or work in the homoeopathic pharmaceutical industry. Postgraduate MD (Homoeopathy) specialisation is available through the AIAPGET entrance exam.

Frequently asked questions about BHMS
Can a BHMS doctor practise allopathy?
No. BHMS registration under the NCH licenses homoeopathic practice; prescribing modern (allopathic) medicines falls outside that scope. The curriculum does cover modern diagnostics and medical sciences so BHMS doctors can diagnose using conventional methods, but treatment must stay within homoeopathy.
Is homoeopathy an officially recognised system of medicine in India?
Yes. Homoeopathy is a statutorily recognised system regulated by the National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH), with its own register of practitioners, government hospitals and dispensaries, and a national PG entrance exam (AIAPGET). Registered BHMS doctors legally use the title of homoeopathic physician.
Is the NEET-UG cutoff for BHMS lower than MBBS and BDS?
Typically yes — BHMS is usually among the last clinical UG seats to close in NEET counselling, so qualifying NEET-UG is often enough for a private-college seat, while government colleges close at moderately better ranks. This makes it an accessible clinical degree for mid-range NEET scorers.
What are the postgraduate options after BHMS?
The main route is a three-year MD (Homoeopathy) in specialities such as Materia Medica, Organon, Repertory, Practice of Medicine, Paediatrics or Psychiatry, entered through AIAPGET. Graduates also pursue MPH, hospital administration, clinical research or wellness-sector qualifications.
What career options exist beyond running a clinic?
BHMS graduates work in government homoeopathic hospitals and dispensaries, AYUSH programmes, homoeopathic pharmaceutical companies (formulation, quality, medical liaison), integrative wellness centres, teaching (after MD) and research bodies such as CCRH.
