BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy)
About BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy)
BPT is a 4.5-year undergraduate degree that trains physiotherapists to assess and treat movement and musculoskeletal disorders through exercise therapy, manual techniques and electrotherapy rather than drugs or surgery. Four years of academic and clinical study are followed by a compulsory six-month clinical internship in hospitals and rehabilitation settings.
The curriculum builds from Anatomy, Physiology and Biomechanics into core physiotherapy sciences: Exercise Therapy, Electrotherapy, and clinical physiotherapy in orthopaedics, neurology, cardiorespiratory conditions, sports, paediatrics and geriatrics. Students learn patient assessment, treatment planning, rehabilitation and the use of physiotherapy equipment.
Graduates work in hospitals, orthopaedic and neuro-rehabilitation centres, sports and fitness settings, and private practice, and can move into home-care and tele-rehabilitation. Postgraduate study (MPT) enables specialisation in areas such as orthopaedic, neurological, cardiopulmonary or sports physiotherapy, and supports teaching and research careers.
Eligibility
Pass in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany and Zoology) and English, typically with a minimum aggregate of 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories and PwBD candidates).
Admission process
Admission is through university and state-level entrance tests or Class 12 merit, depending on the institution; some universities have their own entrance exams. Physiotherapy education falls under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) framework, and NEET-UG is being extended to allied and healthcare undergraduate courses from the 2026-27 session.

Frequently asked questions about BPT
Are physiotherapists doctors? Can they prescribe medicines?
Physiotherapists are independent allied-health professionals under the NCAHP framework, not medical doctors — they assess and treat within the physiotherapy scope using exercise, manual therapy and electrotherapy, and do not prescribe medicines or perform surgery. Use of the "Dr" prefix by physiotherapists is contested and treated differently across states and councils.
Is NEET required for BPT admission?
Historically no — BPT admission has run on university and state entrance tests or Class 12 merit. With allied and healthcare courses moving under the NCAHP framework, NEET-UG-linked eligibility is being extended to these programmes, so check the current admission notification of your target university or state for the applicable route.
Is an MPT necessary after BPT?
Not mandatory — BPT graduates practise after completing the internship and registering. An MPT (Master of Physiotherapy) adds a recognised specialisation such as orthopaedic, neurological, cardiopulmonary or sports physiotherapy, which improves hospital seniority, teaching eligibility and consulting rates, and is effectively required for academia.
Where do physiotherapists work, and can they open their own clinic?
Physiotherapists work in hospitals, orthopaedic and neuro-rehabilitation centres, sports teams and academies, fitness chains, corporate ergonomics programmes and home-healthcare services. After registering under the applicable council framework, they can also run independent physiotherapy clinics and tele-rehabilitation practices within their professional scope.
Do I need Mathematics in Class 12 for BPT?
No. BPT requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) with English in Class 12 — Mathematics is not required. Candidates from the PCM stream without Biology are generally not eligible, since the curriculum builds directly on human biology.
