About BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)

BDS is the undergraduate degree required to practise dentistry in India. It combines four years of academic and pre-clinical/clinical instruction with a one-year rotating internship in which students treat patients across the dental specialties under supervision. The programme is regulated by the Dental Council of India, which prescribes the syllabus, minimum infrastructure and examination pattern.

The early years build foundations in general anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, dental anatomy, dental materials and oral biology, moving into oral pathology, oral medicine, pharmacology and general medicine/surgery. The later years and internship focus on clinical dentistry — conservative dentistry and endodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry and public health dentistry.

Graduates register with the State Dental Council to practise. Career paths include private dental practice, hospital and clinic employment, public-health dentistry, and further specialisation through a three-year Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) after clearing NEET-MDS. Some graduates move into dental-product industry roles, academia or research.

Eligibility

Pass in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with the prescribed minimum aggregate in PCB (typically 50%, 40% for reserved categories), a qualifying NEET-UG score, and completion of 17 years of age by 31 December of the admission year.

Admission process

Admission is through NEET-UG rank and counselling. The 15% All India Quota in government dental colleges is allotted by MCC, while state authorities handle the state quota and private-college seats. The curriculum and standards are set by the Dental Council of India (DCI).

Frequently asked questions about BDS

Is the NEET-UG cutoff for BDS lower than for MBBS?

Generally yes. BDS seats — especially in private colleges — close at lower ranks than MBBS seats in the same counselling process, because most NEET-UG candidates list MBBS first. Government BDS seats in sought-after colleges still remain competitive, so the gap narrows at the top institutions.

Can I open my own dental clinic straight after BDS?

Yes. Once you complete the degree and the one-year rotating internship and register with your State Dental Council, you are licensed to practise general dentistry independently, including running your own clinic. Building a viable practice, however, usually takes a few years of experience and investment in equipment.

Is MDS necessary after BDS?

No — a BDS graduate can practise general dentistry for life. MDS is worthwhile if you want specialist scope (orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery, endodontics and so on), a teaching post in a dental college, or materially higher earning potential, since specialists typically out-earn general practitioners.

How much does BDS cost in a private college?

Private and deemed universities typically charge ₹2–7 lakh per year, putting the total programme cost around ₹10–35 lakh. Government colleges are far cheaper at roughly ₹15,000–₹1.2 lakh per year, which is why their NEET-UG closing ranks are much better.

What happens during the BDS internship year?

The final year of BDS is a compulsory rotating internship in which you treat patients under supervision across all the dental specialties — conservative dentistry, prosthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, paediatric and community dentistry. It converts classroom and pre-clinical training into hands-on chairside competence and is mandatory for registration.
