MDS (Master of Dental Surgery)
About MDS (Master of Dental Surgery)
MDS is the three-year postgraduate degree in dentistry, enabling specialisation in a chosen branch of dental surgery. It combines advanced clinical training, academic study and a research dissertation within a residency-style structure at recognised dental colleges.
Recognised specialties include Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, Periodontology, Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and Public Health Dentistry. Trainees develop deep clinical expertise, handle complex cases and contribute to research.
MDS graduates practise as dental specialists in private and hospital settings, join dental-college faculty, or move into research, industry and public-health leadership. Specialisation substantially raises earning potential compared with a general BDS practitioner.

Frequently asked questions about MDS
How is MDS admission done, and what exam do I need?
Admission is through NEET-MDS, conducted by NBEMS, with MCC counselling the All India Quota and states counselling the state quota; INI-CET governs dental PG seats at Institutes of National Importance such as AIIMS. A completed BDS with internship and State Dental Council registration is required to sit the exam.
Which MDS specialty is the most sought-after?
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics is typically the most competitive, followed by Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, because of their earning potential and clinical scope. Preferences vary, and branches such as Public Health Dentistry or Oral Pathology close at more accessible ranks.
Is MDS worth the cost in a private college?
It depends on the branch and your plans. Private MDS fees are high, especially for clinical specialties, but specialisation substantially raises earning potential and opens teaching and consultancy roles. Candidates weigh the fee against expected returns, and government seats — far cheaper — remain the most cost-effective route.
Can I teach in a dental college after MDS?
Yes. An MDS is the standard qualification for faculty positions in dental colleges, where you can progress from Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor upward while running specialty clinics. Research output and experience influence advancement, and many faculty combine teaching with private specialist practice.
Do MDS specialists earn much more than BDS general dentists?
Generally yes. Specialists command higher consultation and procedure fees, attract referrals, and access corporate-chain and hospital consultancy roles, so their earning ceiling is markedly higher than a general BDS practitioner. Actual income still depends on location, reputation and how a practice is built.
