Science education in India spans the natural and mathematical sciences — physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, the biological and life sciences, and the earth and environmental sciences. It runs as a familiar ladder: the three-year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), now widely being restructured into a four-year honours degree under the National Education Policy 2020, is the foundational undergraduate qualification; the two-year Master of Science (M.Sc) deepens a chosen discipline; and doctoral research (PhD) is the gateway into a scientific career in academia and R&D. Alongside these sit the integrated five-year BS-MS and M.Sc programmes offered by research institutes, which let students move seamlessly from undergraduate coursework into research without a separate admission at the master's stage.

The centre of gravity of Indian science has shifted decisively towards a network of research-intensive institutions built over the last two decades. The seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) at Pune, Kolkata, Mohali, Bhopal, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati and Berhampur, the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) at Bhubaneswar, and the UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CEBS) in Mumbai were all created to nurture research talent from the undergraduate level onwards. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru remains the country's pre-eminent research university, while the IITs, central and state universities, and autonomous colleges continue to award the bulk of B.Sc and M.Sc degrees. This ecosystem is what makes a science degree far more than a stepping stone — it is a direct entry into a research culture.

Admissions differ sharply by rung and institution. Undergraduate science seats in central universities are increasingly filled through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG), while state universities and colleges use board merit or their own tests. The research institutes admit through dedicated exams — the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) for NISER and CEBS, and the IISER Aptitude Test for the IISERs' BS-MS programmes. At the postgraduate level the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM), conducted by the IITs and IISc, is the flagship route into M.Sc, M.Sc-PhD dual and integrated PhD programmes at the IITs, IISc, NITs, IISERs and other centrally funded institutes. Beyond the master's degree, the CSIR-UGC NET — and GATE for many science disciplines — governs entry into funded research fellowships and PhD positions.

Career outcomes reach well beyond the stereotype of the schoolteacher or the university researcher. Science graduates enter research and development in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, biotechnology, materials and electronics; data science and analytics (where mathematics and statistics graduates are in heavy demand); quality control and analytical laboratories; scientific and government organisations such as ISRO, DRDO, BARC, CSIR labs and the meteorological and geological surveys; banking and actuarial work; scientific writing and communication; and, of course, teaching and academia. Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science is the foundational undergraduate degree of the sciences and the most widely awarded science qualification in India. A student chooses a major discipline — physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, botany, zoology, microbiology, biotechnology, computer science, geology, environmental science and many others — and studies it in depth alongside allied subjects and, under the newer curriculum, a spread of skill, value-added and multidisciplinary courses. The traditional structure is three years across six semesters; under the National Education Policy 2020 and the UGC's four-year undergraduate framework, universities are moving to a four-year B.Sc (Honours) with 160 credits, a research option in the fourth year, and certificate/diploma/degree exit points after each year.

Master of Science

The Master of Science is the standard postgraduate degree in the sciences and the point at which a student truly specialises. Over two years and four semesters it deepens a single discipline through advanced coursework, laboratory or computational work and, in most programmes, a substantial research project or dissertation in the final semesters. It is the degree that converts a broad B.Sc into genuine subject expertise and is a prerequisite for the CSIR-UGC NET, for college and university teaching, and for most doctoral programmes.

The integrated five-year programme is the research institutes' signature offering — a seamless BS-MS dual degree (at the IISERs, NISER and CEBS) or integrated M.Sc that admits students straight after Class 12 and carries them through to a master's level without a separate postgraduate admission. The first years build a broad multidisciplinary foundation across biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics before the student specialises, and the programme culminates in a substantial research project. It was designed explicitly to draw talented students into research careers early, and its graduates are strongly represented in doctoral programmes in India and abroad.

The Doctor of Philosophy is the highest academic qualification in science and the licence for an independent research career. Which entrance exam should a science student target after 12th?+

For the elite research institutes, target NEST (for NISER and CEBS) and the IISER Aptitude Test (for the seven IISERs) for their five-year integrated programmes. For undergraduate admission to central and many other universities, CUET-UG is now the main route. Choose based on whether you want an early research-focused programme or a conventional B.Sc.

Is a B.Sc enough for a good career, or do I need a master's?+

A B.Sc can lead to entry-level lab, analytics, quality and teaching roles, especially if you add quantitative or computational skills. But research, most R&D positions and college teaching expect at least a master's and usually a PhD. Treat the B.Sc as the foundation and plan for an M.Sc via IIT JAM or an integrated programme.

What is IIT JAM used for?+

IIT JAM is the national entrance for postgraduate science. It admits students to M.Sc, M.Sc-PhD dual and integrated PhD programmes at the IITs and IISc, with NITs and other centrally funded institutes admitting through CCMN counselling. It offers seven papers, and a candidate can attempt at most two.

How do I get into a funded PhD in science?+

The standard route is a relevant master's degree, then qualifying the CSIR-UGC NET with a Junior Research Fellowship — or GATE for many disciplines — followed by the host institute's written test and interview. A JRF carries a monthly stipend and a research contingency. Some institutes also run integrated PhD programmes that admit after a Bachelor's degree.

What is the difference between an integrated BS-MS and a separate B.Sc plus M.Sc?+

The integrated five-year BS-MS (offered by IISERs, NISER and CEBS) admits you after Class 12 and takes you to master's level in one continuous, research-oriented programme with no separate postgraduate admission. A B.Sc followed by an M.Sc is two distinct degrees with a fresh admission (often via IIT JAM) in between. The integrated route suits students committed to research early; the separate route offers more flexibility.

Which B.Sc specialisations have the strongest job market?+

Statistics, mathematics and computer science lead on direct employability through data analytics, actuarial and IT roles. Chemistry and biotechnology have deep industry demand in pharma and chemicals but usually reward a master's. Physics is versatile and feeds both research and quantitative careers. Pick a discipline you can excel in and layer on computational skills.

How does the NEST scoring and merit rule work?+

NEST has four sections (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics), each with 20 MCQs. A correct answer earns +3, a wrong answer loses 1 and an unattempted question scores 0. The merit list is computed from your best three of the four sections — out of 180 — so a weaker fourth subject can be dropped, though you should attempt at least three sections.

Are science degrees eligible for government jobs?+

Yes. Science graduates and postgraduates are eligible for a wide range of government roles — scientist posts at ISRO, DRDO, BARC and the CSIR labs, positions in the geological, meteorological and other scientific surveys, banking and civil-services examinations, and teaching posts. Many of these require or reward a master's degree and relevant national examinations.
