Integrated BS-MS / Integrated M.Sc
About Integrated BS-MS / Integrated M.Sc
The integrated five-year programme is the research institutes' signature offering — a seamless BS-MS dual degree (at the IISERs, NISER and CEBS) or integrated M.Sc that admits students straight after Class 12 and carries them through to a master's level without a separate postgraduate admission. The first years build a broad multidisciplinary foundation across biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics before the student specialises, and the programme culminates in a substantial research project. It was designed explicitly to draw talented students into research careers early, and its graduates are strongly represented in doctoral programmes in India and abroad.
Admission is exam-gated and competitive. NISER Bhubaneswar and the UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences in Mumbai — both autonomous institutions of the Department of Atomic Energy — admit exclusively through the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST). The seven IISERs (Pune, Kolkata, Mohali, Bhopal, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati and Berhampur) admit to their BS-MS programmes through the IISER Aptitude Test. These are among the most sought-after science seats in the country.
The programme suits students who already know they want a research career and would rather commit to a five-year immersion than assemble a B.Sc and M.Sc separately. Its structure — research exposure from the early years, generous laboratory access, and in the DAE institutes the DISHA scholarship and INSPIRE-SHE support — makes it an unusually direct pipeline into a PhD and a life in science.
Eligibility
10+2 in the science stream, generally with a minimum aggregate (commonly 60%, relaxed for reserved categories); admission through a dedicated entrance test
Admission process
NEST for NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai; the IISER Aptitude Test for the seven IISERs; CUET-UG or institute tests for integrated M.Sc at central universities
