Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA)
About Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA)
The PGDCA is a one-year conversion diploma that gives graduates from any discipline a working foundation in computing — programming, operating systems, databases, data structures and application development — without committing to a full master’s degree. IGNOU’s current avatar of the programme is representative of the modern syllabus: ten courses across two semesters covering programming in C and Python, computer organization, operating systems with Windows/Linux labs, database management systems, object-oriented programming in Java, and data structures and algorithms, for 32 credits in all.
The diploma’s audience is distinctive: commerce, arts and science graduates moving toward IT-adjacent roles, government-job aspirants (many state clerical, data-entry-operator and computer-operator posts list PGDCA as a recognized computer qualification), working professionals formalizing self-taught skills, and graduates testing the waters before an MCA. At open universities it is also one of the cheapest recognized postgraduate credentials in computing — IGNOU’s programme costs a fraction of a private master’s.
Its limits should be understood equally clearly. A PGDCA alone rarely competes with a BCA/MCA for developer roles at selective employers; it works best as a stepping stone — toward an MCA (several universities give PGDCA holders credit or preference), toward government posts that ask for a recognized computer diploma, or as the structured first rung of a self-driven programming career.
Eligibility
Any bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years from a recognized university; IGNOU asks for Mathematics at 10+2 or graduation, with non-maths graduates admitted alongside a bridge course (BCS-012)
Admission process
Direct/merit admission at most universities and open universities; IGNOU admits through its online admission portal in both admission cycles, with no entrance test
Course fees
- Government colleges
- Around ₹10,000–₹25,000 total at open and state universities (IGNOU charges ₹11,000 per semester, plus ₹1,000 extra in the first semester for non-maths students)
- Private colleges
- ₹20,000–₹60,000 total at private institutes
Indicative bands — examination fees are usually charged separately; among the cheapest recognized postgraduate computing credentials in India
Salary outlook
- Entry level
- 2 – 4 LPA
- Mid career
- 3 – 6 LPA
Indicative ranges — the PGDCA is usually a stepping stone (to MCA, government posts or formalized IT skills) rather than a terminal qualification for high-paying developer roles
Core subjects
- Programming in C and Python
- Computer Organization
- Operating Systems (Windows & Linux labs)
- Database Management Systems
- Object-Oriented Programming with Java
- Data Structures & Algorithms
- Practical labs across both semesters
