CMA FoundationCost & Management Accountancy Foundation Examination (ICMAI)
About CMA Foundation
The CMA Foundation is the entry examination of the Cost & Management Accountancy course under ICMAI's Syllabus 2022. It comprises four 100-mark papers — business laws and communication, financial and cost accounting fundamentals, business mathematics and statistics, and business economics and management — each set as 50 multiple-choice questions of 2 marks with a two-hour duration and no negative marking. The exam is conducted twice a year, in June and December, with the four papers arranged in two sessions; recent notifications have specified MCQ mode on OMR sheets at examination centres, so candidates should confirm the delivery mode in the current time-table on icmai.in.
Students can register after Class 10, but must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent recognized qualification before appearing — which makes the Foundation a natural target for the June or December window right after board exams. Graduates do not need it at all: ICMAI admits degree-holders directly to the Intermediate course, papers 5–12 of the scheme. Compared with its CA counterpart, the CMA Foundation is widely regarded as the gentler entry point, with no negative marking and generally higher pass rates, though the Intermediate and Final levels step up sharply in depth.
Accepted by: ICMAI — qualifying the Foundation allows enrolment in the CMA Intermediate course (pass norms require minimum marks per paper plus a 50% aggregate — see the current ICMAI examination notification)
