B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture
About B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture
The B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture is the flagship undergraduate degree of the stream and the standard qualification for almost every agriculture career and postgraduate pathway in India. Because all UG agricultural-science degrees are officially designated professional degrees, this is a four-year "Hons" programme following ICAR's model curriculum (roughly 180 credits across eight semesters), not a general three-year B.Sc. It builds a full working map of modern farming science: agronomy and crop production, soil science, plant breeding and genetics, entomology and plant pathology, horticulture, agricultural economics and extension, agricultural engineering basics, and increasingly biotechnology, remote sensing and precision agriculture.
A defining feature is experiential learning. The later part of the programme includes a Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) and Experiential Learning Programme (ELP) / hands-on modules in which students work in villages and with agri-enterprises, run demonstration plots, and complete skill-based "student READY" components. This is what makes the degree employable straight out of college for extension, field-officer and agri-input roles, and it is a large reason employers and government recruiters treat the four-year Hons degree as the baseline.
The two most common admission routes matter to plan for. For ICAR's All-India Quota — a share of seats across participating State Agricultural Universities plus all seats in Central and Deemed universities — admission is now via CUET (ICAR-UG) using domain scores in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Agriculture. The larger state-quota share is filled through each state's own CET (MP PAT, CG PAT, Rajasthan JET, OUAT and others) or state counselling. After the degree, graduates commonly sit ICAR AIEEA (PG) for an M.Sc with a scholarship, or competitive exams such as IBPS AFO (Agriculture Field Officer), state agriculture services and ICAR ARS.
Eligibility
10+2 in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and/or Mathematics (Agriculture as a subject also accepted at many universities); typically a minimum 50% aggregate (relaxed for reserved categories)
Admission process
ICAR All-India Quota seats are filled via CUET (ICAR-UG) conducted by the NTA; state-quota seats via state agriculture CETs (MP PAT, CG PAT, Rajasthan JET, OUAT, etc.) or state counselling; some private universities admit on 10+2 merit

Frequently asked questions about B.Sc
Is B.Sc Agriculture a 3-year or 4-year course?
It is a four-year (eight-semester) professional "Hons" degree following the ICAR model curriculum, including a Rural Agricultural Work Experience / experiential-learning phase. It is not the general three-year B.Sc — the professional status is precisely why it is the baseline qualification for agriculture jobs and PG study.
How do I get into B.Sc Agriculture at an ICAR university now?
For ICAR's All-India Quota, admission is via CUET (ICAR-UG) conducted by the NTA, using your domain-subject scores (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or Agriculture). ICAR's own AIEEA UG test was discontinued for this quota from 2023. State-quota seats are filled through state agriculture CETs (MP PAT, CG PAT, Rajasthan JET, OUAT and others) or state counselling.
What jobs can I get after B.Sc Agriculture?
Common routes include Agriculture Field Officer at banks (via IBPS AFO), agronomist/farm manager, agriculture development/extension officer (via state PSCs), seed and agri-input roles at agribusiness companies, and — after an M.Sc/PhD — research scientist posts via ICAR ARS. Government agriculture-services and banking roles are especially popular for their pay and stability.
Can PCM (non-biology) students do B.Sc Agriculture?
Usually yes. Most agricultural universities accept 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and either Biology or Mathematics, and many also count Agriculture as a qualifying subject. Requirements vary by university, so confirm the accepted subject combinations in the CUET (ICAR-UG) or state-CET information bulletin before applying.
