M.Sc (Agriculture)
About M.Sc (Agriculture)
M.Sc (Agriculture) is the standard postgraduate specialization for agriculture graduates and the gateway to research, teaching and higher technical roles. Students choose a discipline — agronomy, soil science, genetics and plant breeding, entomology, plant pathology, horticulture, agricultural economics, extension, biotechnology and others — and combine coursework with a supervised research thesis. It is a two-year, four-semester programme and is heavily research-oriented in the second year.
The premier route is ICAR AIEEA (PG): ICAR reserves an All-India Quota of master's seats (indicatively around 25%, and 100% in its Deemed universities), and qualifying with a good rank additionally brings an ICAR Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) stipend. An M.Sc markedly widens career options — it is effectively required for ICAR ARS scientist posts (through the ARS-NET examination), assistant-professor roles at agricultural universities, and senior R&D positions in seed, agri-input and biotech companies, and it is the natural stepping stone to a PhD.
Eligibility
A relevant 4-year Bachelor's degree in agriculture or allied sciences (B.Sc Agriculture/Horticulture, etc.); typically 60% marks or equivalent OGPA for General category (relaxed for reserved categories)
Admission process
ICAR reserves an All-India Quota (indicatively around 25%) of master's seats filled via ICAR AIEEA (PG) with JRF/scholarship; the remaining seats are filled through university/state entrance and counselling
