Hostel food has become a live issue on Gujarat campuses. After students fell ill following meals at a hostel in Surat and a girls' hostel in Anand, with further complaints reported from Banaskantha, Surendranagar, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar, a statewide inspection drive of hostel messes was announced on 19 September, covering government, semi-government and university hostels.

What the checks look at

  • Quality of vegetables and provisions, and how long they have been in store.
  • Kitchen cleanliness and the condition of utensils.
  • Drinking-water safety.
  • Hygiene of the staff who cook and serve.
  • Quantity and nutritional value of what actually reaches the plate.

The route a hosteller has, whoever inspects

A campaign comes and goes; the complaint machinery stays. If mess food makes you or your roommates ill:

  1. Write it down the same day. A dated written complaint to the rector or warden — names, meal, time, how many students were affected — is the document everything later rests on. A verbal complaint leaves no trace.
  2. Escalate to the institution. Every university and affiliated college has a students' grievance redressal committee; a hostel mess committee usually exists too, and students sit on it.
  3. Food safety is a regulator's job, not the warden's. Unsafe or adulterated food served by a mess contractor is a matter for the state's Food and Drug Control Administration, which registers complaints against food business operators and can inspect and sample.
  4. Keep evidence. Photographs with a timestamp, the mess menu for the day, and medical papers if anyone was treated.

Students living away from home eat two or three meals a day from one kitchen they did not choose. That is precisely why the paperwork matters: a documented complaint is what turns a bad week into a record someone has to answer for.
