Gujarat Technological University is inviting students of government engineering colleges in civil, mechanical, electrical, computer and chemical engineering to study their 6th semester at IIT Gandhinagar. Two students per branch get in, the state pays ₹50,000 of the tuition, and applications go to IIT Gandhinagar before 26 October.

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has opened its External Students Program with IIT Gandhinagar for 2026-27. Students of government engineering colleges affiliated with GTU can apply to study their 6th semester at the IIT campus, with the credits counted towards their GTU degree. The circular is dated 16 October 2026, and applications must be made on the IIT Gandhinagar website before 26 October 2026.

Who can apply
- BE students at a government engineering college affiliated with GTU, in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer or Chemical engineering.
- Your college verifies your CPI up to semester 4 and may forward only the top two students in each of these five branches.
- You must have no backlog, must not have been found guilty by the unfair means (UFM) committee, and must not have used this programme before.
How many get in
IIT Gandhinagar will admit 2 students per branch, so at most 10 students in the semester. Selection is on GTU merit plus a personal interview and/or a test run by IIT Gandhinagar.
What the semester involves
| Item | What the circular says |
|---|---|
| Credits at IIT Gandhinagar | At least 18, in courses evaluated by IIT Gandhinagar |
| GTU subjects you are exempted from | 18 credits: semester 6 professional electives (6) and open elective (2); semester 7 professional electives (6), open elective (2) and the skill-based internship (2) |
| Subjects you still owe GTU | All semester 6 professional core subjects, studied in semester 7 after you return |
| Tuition | ₹50,000 per student for the semester paid by the Education Department, Government of Gujarat; the rest borne by IIT Gandhinagar |
| Hostel and mess | Paid by the student; you must live on campus for the whole semester |
You cannot pick courses at IIT Gandhinagar that are the same as, or very close to, subjects you have studied or will study at GTU. Grades and credits earned there will appear on your GTU marksheet.
How to apply
- Ask your principal for the consent letter (Annexure B of the circular). You fill Part A with your enrolment number, branch and CPI and declare you have no backlog; the institute verifies and signs Part B.

- If selected, send GTU an e-copy of the consent letter and IIT Gandhinagar’s admission confirmation letter.
What to do now
- Check your CPI up to semester 4 against your classmates. Only the top two per branch in your college can be put forward.
- Meet your head of department or principal within days. The consent letter must be issued before you apply, and the window shuts before 26 October.
