The Gujarat government has constituted a 13-member committee to review the Gujarat Public University Statutes, 2024 and recommend amendments — the operating rules that sit under the Gujarat Public Universities Act, 2023.
Why the review
The statutes have been interpreted and implemented differently from one university to the next, which has created administrative and operational problems on the ground. The panel is also tasked with aligning the statutes with the National Education Policy. Gujarat University is among the institutions that have made representations.
Who is on it
The Education Minister chairs the committee. Members include the additional chief secretary (education), the commissioner of higher education, and two vice-chancellors — Pratapsinh Chauhan of Junagadh University and Dr Bharat Ramanuj M. of Bhavnagar University — alongside representatives of the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi, North Gujarat University, a law college in Jamnagar and P T Sarvajanik College of Science. No deadline for the panel’s report was announced.

Statutes govern unglamorous but consequential things: examination and re-evaluation rules, affiliation conditions, admission procedure and the powers of university authorities.
