Gujarat’s school-monitoring command centre has become something the state exports. On 10 September, Mizoram’s education minister Vanlalthlana arrived in Gandhinagar with School Education and Samagra Shiksha officials and spent the day inside the Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK), working through how it runs with Gujarat Education Department officials.
What the VSK actually is
Strip away the branding and it is a control room for a school system. Attendance, learning-outcome and teacher data flow in from schools across the state into a single set of dashboards, so an official can see which blocks and which classrooms are slipping while the year is still running — instead of discovering it in a report written after the exams. That shift, from annual post-mortem to live signal, is the whole argument for it, and it is why other states and the Centre keep pointing at Gujarat’s version as the reference implementation.
Why Mizoram cannot simply copy it
The minister said his state is working to integrate technology with education and intends to adapt Gujarat’s experience to local conditions — and the adaptation is the hard part. Gujarat runs dense districts with large schools and reliable connectivity. Mizoram is a hill state of small, scattered schools where the binding constraint is often the network, not the dashboard. A model built for scale has to be rebuilt for reach.
An engineering-college tie-up came out of it too
The delegation also visited the New Age Makers’ Institute of Technology (NAMTECH) in Gandhinagar, and the minister invited the institute to work with Mizoram’s upcoming engineering college on industry-oriented courses. Curriculum design decides more about a new campus than its buildings do: it is the difference between a first batch that gets placed and one that discovers after four years that nobody was hiring for what it learned. Gujarat officials, for their part, said they wanted to pick up practices from Mizoram’s system in return.
There is a quiet implication here for students in Gujarat. The attendance your school marks and the assessment data it uploads are not paperwork vanishing into a file — they feed a state-level system that other governments now travel here to study.
