NMC adds 13,186 MBBS seats, taking India past 1.4 lakh for 2026-27
The revised seat matrix for 2026-27 puts the country at 1,40,214 MBBS seats across 836 colleges, with 38 new medical colleges this year. Private colleges absorbed 10,400 of the new seats against 2,786 in government ones.
The National Medical Commission has revised the MBBS seat matrix for 2026-27, adding 13,186 seats and taking India's total to 1,40,214, excluding the Institutes of National Importance. Thirty-eight new medical colleges opened this year.

Read that table slowly, because it is the story. Private colleges took nearly four out of every five new seats, and private capacity now exceeds government capacity by more than 12,000 places. For a NEET candidate, more seats is unambiguously good news; but a seat in a private college can cost several times what a government seat does, so "1.4 lakh seats" and "1.4 lakh affordable seats" are not the same sentence. If you are counting on the expansion, cost your options out at the college level before you count on it.
How it reached counselling
The revision cleared the Medical Assessment & Rating Board and then the first and second appeal committees of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare before taking effect. Downstream, the Medical Counselling Committee folded roughly 600 additional MBBS, BDS and BSc Nursing seats into round 2, whose allotment result is out with reporting running 12 to 18 September.
The warning attached
The commission was explicit that the sanctioned intake is a ceiling, not a suggestion: admissions made in excess of approved intake capacity will be treated as non-compliance with the NMC Act. That matters to students more than it sounds. Over-admission is how candidates end up in a seat that is later cancelled, sometimes after a year of study. If a college offers you a place outside the counselling process, the seat you are being offered may not exist.
