Gujarat High Court names 60 law graduates as Legal Assistants to judges, at ₹60,000 a month
The High Court of Gujarat has published its select list for contractual Legal Assistant posts: 60 candidates for 65 advertised vacancies, chosen from 103 who cleared the written test. Total scores ran from 116.25 down to 76 out of 150. Final-year law students on the list must show they passed with 55%.

The High Court of Gujarat published the select list for its Legal Assistant recruitment (Advertisement No. RC/B/1320/2026 (LA)) on 9 October 2026. Legal Assistants work directly for High Court judges: they research case law, attend court, take notes and draft memoranda and opinions. The posts are contractual and pay a fixed ₹60,000 a month.

The numbers
| Stage | Figure |
|---|---|
| Vacancies advertised (July 2026) | 65 |
| Written test (100 MCQs) | 9 August 2026 |
| Scored 50% or more and called for viva (list of 3 September) | 103 |
| Selected (list of 9 October) | 60 |
| Highest aggregate (out of 150) | 116.25 |
| Lowest aggregate on the list | 76.00 |
The selection added the written-test score (100 marks) to the viva score (50 marks); candidates also had to clear a 50% minimum in the viva. Sixty names for 65 posts means a few vacancies stayed unfilled in this round.
What selected candidates should know
- Final-year students: the list notes that those selected while still in the final year of a three-year or five-year LL.B. will be appointed only after they produce a provisional certificate and a final-year marksheet with at least 55%.
- Tenure: 11 months to start, extendable once by up to 11 more months on the recommendation of the judge concerned and with the Chief Justice's approval. Either side can end the contract with one month's notice.
- Reservation does not apply, because the appointments are contractual.
For next year's applicants
The High Court has hired Legal Assistants in earlier rounds too, and the pay makes this a strong first job for a fresh law graduate. The bar is specific. You must be a fresh law graduate aged 26 or under on the closing date, with at least 55%; final-year students can apply provisionally. You also need basic computer skills and working Gujarati. The 100-question test carried a 0.25-mark penalty for each wrong answer and drew on core law subjects — the Constitution, civil procedure, criminal law, property and limitation law — plus general knowledge. This year's form opened on 1 July — watch hc-ojas.gujarat.gov.in from early summer.
