Agartala medical college goes from 150 to 250 MBBS seats
Agartala Government Medical College has been cleared for 100 additional MBBS seats from the 2026-27 session, taking it to the maximum intake permitted under national norms and lifting Tripura’s total to 500 seats.
Agartala Government Medical College has been approved for 100 additional MBBS seats, taking its intake from 150 to 250 from the 2026-27 academic session. The state government announced the clearance on 21 September.
What it changes
- AGMC joins the group of medical colleges operating at 250 students a year, the maximum intake permitted under national norms.
- Tripura's total MBBS capacity rises from 400 to 500 seats.
Why a seat in your own state matters more than it sounds
For students in the North East, the alternative to a local seat has usually been an expensive private seat in another state or a private college abroad. A hundred additional government seats in Agartala is a hundred families a year who do not have to make that choice and, over time, a hundred doctors a year more likely to practise in the region they trained in.
An intake rise of this size is also a real institutional commitment. Under national norms, seats at 250 require the faculty, the hospital beds, the clinical material and the teaching infrastructure to match. A college does not get to 250 by asking.
The counselling caveat
Seat increases approved during a counselling season land in the published seat matrix only when the regulator revises it, and the regulator states plainly that its matrix remains subject to revision as appeal committees decide. Candidates should therefore check the current seat matrix and the participating-institute list before each round rather than the version they downloaded earlier, and should not assume a newly announced seat is available in the round they are filling choices for right now.
