Gujarat University adds campus-wide free Wi-Fi and paid on-campus internships

Students across roughly 30 departments can log on with their enrolment number, and a new “Earn While You Learn” scheme offers paid administrative, programming and clerical work on campus.

Gujarat University has announced two student-facing changes on its Ahmedabad campus: free high-speed Wi-Fi across the university, and a paid internship scheme that lets students work on campus while they study.

Free Wi-Fi

The network covers roughly 30 departments. Students connect by registering with their enrolment number or mobile number, and the university has pitched it at online coursework and recorded lectures — the kind of use that is expensive on a personal mobile data plan.

“Earn While You Learn”

The paid internship scheme places students in administrative, computer programming and clerical roles within the university. The announcement did not put a figure on the stipend, so students should ask their department for the rate and the weekly hours before signing up.

The measures were announced by Jagdish Joshi, the in-charge Vice-Chancellor.

Why it matters

On-campus paid work is rare at Indian state universities, and it is one of the few ways a student can build a work record without commuting to an outside employer between classes. If you are choosing between colleges in Ahmedabad, this is the sort of thing worth asking about at admission time.
