Maharashtra gets its first private veterinary colleges: 400 BVSc seats at ₹5.5 lakh a year

The Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), Nagpur, has its first private affiliated colleges: five in veterinary science and three in dairy technology, nearly doubling the state's veterinary seats.

The new colleges

Veterinary science, 80 BVSc & AH seats each:

  • Yashodeep Veterinary College, Saralgaon, Thane
  • Tatyasaheb Kore Institute of Veterinary and Animal Science, Warananagar, Kolhapur
  • Parikrama Veterinary Science College, Kashti, Ahilyanagar
  • Shri Siddhagiri College of Veterinary Science, Kaneri, Kolhapur
  • Dr Rajendra Suryawanshi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Gandheli, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

Dairy technology, 40 B.Tech seats each: Late Shaktikumar Sancheti Dairy Technology College (Buldhana), Prof Prataprao Borade Dairy Technology College (Gandheli, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) and Aditya Dairy Technology College (Beed).

The numbers that matter

  • BVSc & AH: 464 seats in six government colleges, plus 400 private.
  • B.Tech Dairy Technology: 80 seats in two government colleges, plus 120 private.
  • Fees (ad-hoc, set by the Fee Regulating Authority): ₹5.5 lakh a year for BVSc at the private colleges, against ₹27,500 at government colleges. ₹1 lakh a year for private dairy technology.

That fee gap, twenty times, is the headline for families. Over a five-and-a-half-year BVSc, the private route comes to close to ₹30 lakh in tuition alone.

How admission works

  • BVSc & AH: through NEET UG scores.
  • Dairy technology: through MHT CET (PCM) or ICAR's CUET scores.

The admission prospectus was published on 25 September, about three months later than last year's process, which began on 2 July. Classes normally start in mid-August, so this year's first term will be compressed.
