MCC reopened resignations before round 3, which is why more seats are in the pool
Facing a flood of requests, the counselling committee allowed round 1 and round 2 freeze and float candidates to resign their seats between 17 and 18 September, with forfeiture of the security deposit. Those seats now feed round 3.
Ahead of round 3, the Medical Counselling Committee did something it does not do lightly: it reopened seat resignation for candidates who had already accepted and joined a seat. The window ran from 3:30 pm on 17 September to 6:00 pm on 18 September, and it was opened, in the committee's own words, in view of the many requests being received from NEET UG 2026 candidates.
Who it covered, and on what terms
- Freeze and float candidates from round 1 and round 2 who had accepted an allotted seat but wanted out. Float candidates were eligible only if they had not been upgraded.
- Every resignation was with forfeiture of the security deposit. There was no free exit.
- Freeze candidates had to report physically at the allotted institute to resign.
- Float candidates had to resign online and generate a seat withdrawal slip through the portal. The notice warned that without the generated slip, the resignation would be treated as null and void.
- Once resigned, the candidate has no claim over that seat.
Why a closed window is still news
Because of where those seats went. Every seat surrendered in that 26-hour window is a seat that re-enters the round 3 matrix, alongside the seats freed by candidates who never reported at all. This is the plumbing behind a fact that every counselling veteran knows and every first-timer doubts: closing ranks in round 3 are almost always deeper than in round 2, sometimes considerably.
What it means for your round 3 list
If you are registering for round 3 between 22 and 27 September, build your choice list against round 2's closing numbers as the floor, not the ceiling. Colleges that looked one or two hundred places out of reach are worth listing. The mistake is not aiming too high; it is filing a list too short to catch the seat that comes back.
It is also worth understanding the trade you make at allotment. A freeze locks you in and ends your counselling. A float keeps you in the running for an upgrade but leaves you holding whatever you have if no upgrade comes. Neither is free to undo, as this notice's forfeiture terms make very clear.
