NCERT: no topics were dropped from Class 9 maths, they were moved
After a count of chapters suggested lines and angles and Euclid’s geometry had gone, NCERT says both are integrated into other chapters of the new Class 9 book, and that algorithms have been added. The final syllabus is due in October.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training has said that no topics have been removed from the new Class 9 mathematics curriculum, responding to concerns that the new textbook had fewer chapters than the old one.
Where the "missing" topics went
- Lines and angles: no longer a standalone chapter. It is taught inside the chapters on propositions and their converses and on quadrilaterals. (Its basics are also covered as a separate chapter in Class 6.)
- Euclid's geometry: spread across Chapters 5, 6, 9, 12 and 13, through polygons, circles, and parallel and intersecting lines.
- Algorithms: a new addition, meant to build computational thinking and a grounding for understanding AI.
Why the confusion
NCERT's point is that the syllabus was judged by counting chapters. Under the National Curriculum Framework, the curriculum is built around curricular goals, competencies and learning outcomes, and the same content can be distributed differently across chapters.
What students and teachers should do
- If you are in Class 9 this year, don't skip a topic because it has no chapter of its own. Lines and angles and Euclid's axioms are still examinable.
- Teachers building a year plan from the old chapter list will need to map it to the new book, chapter by chapter.
- The final syllabus is to be released by NCERT and CBSE in October 2026. Treat the draft as provisional until then.
