NIRF 2026 rankings are imminent: 16 categories, five parameters, and marks off for retractions

The National Institutional Ranking Framework results for 2026 are due shortly, to be released by the Ministry of Education at nirfindia.org. Before the screenshots start circulating, it is worth knowing what the number actually measures.

The 16 categories

Rankings are published for overall, college, university, engineering, management, medical, dental, pharmacy, law, architecture, agriculture, innovation, research institutions, open universities, skill universities and state-funded public universities. A college that tops one of these can sit mid-table in another. Comparing across categories is the most common way the tables get misread.

The five parameters

  1. Teaching, Learning & Resources: includes faculty-student ratio, the one line that most directly describes your day as a student.
  2. Research and Professional Practice: publication volume and quality, PhDs produced.
  3. Graduation Outcomes: completion and placement-linked measures.
  4. Outreach and Inclusivity: regional, gender and social diversity of the student body.
  5. Peer Perception: employer and academic feedback.

Rankings are compiled by the National Board of Accreditation from data institutions submit themselves, cross-checked against third-party sources including Web of Science, Scopus and Derwent Innovation. Since last year the framework has tightened, with more parameters and negative marking for retracted research papers. This is a direct response to institutions inflating publication counts with work that did not survive scrutiny. A sustainable development goals category was also added.

Reading the result like a student, not a brochure

Only the top 100 in each category get individual ranks; everyone below is placed in bands such as 101-150 and 151-200. So a college advertising "ranked in the top 150" is telling you it did not make the top 100. And the parameters are weighted towards research output, which is a poor proxy for undergraduate teaching quality. If you are choosing where to spend four years, the sub-scores are more useful than the headline rank: pull the faculty-student ratio and graduation outcomes for the specific colleges on your shortlist and compare those directly.
