Undergraduate applicants in Ahmedabad were caught between two admission processes after St Xavier’s College declined to admit through Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) and issued its own merit list, while Gujarat University ran the centralised process in parallel.
What went wrong for students
- Students allotted a seat through GCAS could not get confirmation that their acceptance would stand.
- Students admitted directly by the college had no confirmation that the university would recognise the admission.
Fr. David of St Xavier’s restated the college’s opposition to GCAS, said a direct merit list had been briefly released and then withdrawn, and said the college would follow the directions of the High Court. A Gujarat High Court hearing on the matter was listed for 8 June 2026. The National Students’ Union of India submitted a memorandum asking authorities to protect students caught in the middle.
What to do if you are in this position
Keep every acknowledgement, allotment letter and fee receipt from both processes, and get any direct admission confirmed in writing by the affiliating university before you stop pursuing the centralised route. Where a court is seized of the matter, the safest position is the one that keeps both options alive.
