University of Bristol opens its first international campus in Mumbai, opposite IIT Bombay

The University of Bristol has opened the first international campus in its history, and it is in Mumbai, at Cignus Powai, across the road from IIT Bombay. The inaugural cohort has started. After several years of policy permitting foreign universities to set up in India, this is one of the first campuses where the permission has turned into students in classrooms.

What is on offer

  • Data science and finance as the founding focus, with research collaboration, experiential learning and industry partnerships built around them.
  • A three-week pre-semester Bristol Global Futures Lab opening the year for the first cohort.
  • Global Mobility: selected undergraduates can spend part of their degree studying at the UK campus.
  • A University of Bristol-Government of Maharashtra scholarship, with four recipients in the first intake.

The real pitch, and the real questions

The appeal is easy to state: a UK university’s teaching without UK living costs, and without the visa lottery that has made recent admission cycles unpredictable for Indian families. Fair enough. But a first cohort is buying a prospectus, not a track record, so ask the campus these four things before you apply. Any serious institution will answer them in writing.

  1. Who teaches here? How many faculty are based in Mumbai full-time, versus flying in or appearing on video.
  2. What does the certificate say? The exact wording of the degree awarded in India, and whether it is the same award as the UK one.
  3. What does mobility cost? The UK semester’s fees, accommodation and visa expenses on top of your tuition here.
  4. Who recruits from the first batch? There is no placement record yet, so ask which employers have committed, not which are “in discussion”.

President Evelyn Welch framed the launch around confidence in India’s talent and its role in shaping future education, and campus director Michelle Jones pointed to the response from students and parents in the opening year. The university reaches its 150th anniversary as the Mumbai campus takes its first students.
