711 candidates walked away from a Gujarat medical seat — and lost their deposit
The admission committee has forfeited the security deposits of 711 candidates who were allotted a seat in round 2 and never reported. Those seats now go back into the pool for round 3, which opens on 28 September.
On 19 September the Gujarat admission committee published two lists that, read together, explain where round 3's seats are coming from. 711 candidates who were allotted a medical or dental seat in round 2 did not report at all. Their refundable security deposit has been forfeited and they have been removed from the merit list.
The breakdown
- 439 of the forfeitures were on medical seats, 272 on dental seats.
- By seat type: 383 government-quota seats, 322 management-quota seats and 6 NRI seats.
- A separate list names a further three candidates who did report and then cancelled — one NRI seat at GMERS Sola and two ST-category seats at Pramukhswami Medical College, Karamsad. Their deposits were forfeited too.
The cost of not showing up
Forfeiture is not the whole penalty. Being removed from the merit list means the candidate is out of the remaining state rounds altogether — there is no round 3 for someone who silently skipped round 2. Candidates who genuinely want out have a cancellation route through their help centre, and using it is not the same as vanishing.
The lists also make clear that this is not only a top-of-the-merit phenomenon. The very first name on the non-reporting list held a government seat at M. P. Shah Government Medical College, Jamnagar at an all-India rank around 15,700 — almost certainly a candidate who took an All India Quota or out-of-state seat instead.
Why this matters if you are in round 3
Every one of those 711 seats returns to the pool. Government-quota seats at GMERS colleges, management seats at private colleges and a handful of NRI seats will all reappear in the round 3 matrix. That is the mechanical reason round 3 closing merit numbers run deeper than round 2 — and the reason a candidate whose merit number missed a college by a few hundred places in round 2 should still list it.
