A 100-metre wind blade factory opens at Bavla: the jobs it needs, and how to train for them

Envision Energy has inaugurated a wind turbine blade plant at Bavla in Ahmedabad district.

The plant

• 14 acres, with an installed capacity of 2.66 GW a year.
• Blades up to 100 metres long.
• Developed with Dilip Buildcon and the Ashoka team; the company's third manufacturing site in India, part of a ₹500 crore expansion.
• The company says it has the potential to create more than 4,000 direct jobs and over 15,000 opportunities in the wider supply chain.

Who a blade factory hires

A wind blade is a giant composite structure, with glass or carbon fibre laid into a mould, infused with resin and cured. That shapes the jobs:

• Shop floor: composite laminators, moulders, finishers and painters; ITI trades such as fitter, machinist and electrician for moulds, cranes and utilities.
• Engineering: mechanical, production, polymer and chemical engineers for process, tooling and quality; civil and structural engineers for testing.
• Quality and inspection: non-destructive testing (ultrasonic and visual inspection of laminates) is a specialised, well-paid niche.
• Downstream: blade logistics, installation and wind turbine technician roles at wind farms across Kutch and Saurashtra.

How to prepare

If you are in an ITI or diploma course in Ahmedabad or nearby, a short course in composites or a certification in NDT can make you stand out. Engineering students should look for internships in composites or quality control. Gujarat is one of India's largest wind-energy states, so skills built at a blade plant travel.
