A doctoral fellowship that pays ₹60,000 a month and up to ₹10 lakh for a prototype
The technical education council has committed ₹245 crore over five years to 150 PhD scholars working on innovation and entrepreneurship, with a stipend that rises to ₹70,000 a month and an optional stint inside industry.
Doctoral funding in India rarely comes with money for building things. This one does. The technical education council announced on 3 September 2026 a doctoral fellowship programme for innovation and entrepreneurship, backed by ₹245 crore over five years and covering 150 PhD scholars.
What a scholar gets
- ₹60,000 a month plus applicable house rent allowance for years one to three.
- ₹70,000 a month plus HRA for years four and five.
- An innovation grant of up to ₹10 lakh for prototype development, process work and related activity.
- An optional six to twelve month industrial stint at a partner organisation for R&D and prototype work.
- A maximum tenure of five years, subject to satisfactory academic and research progress.
What it is actually for
The brief is problem-driven, application-oriented research: innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer, commercialisation and societal impact. That is a different animal from a conventional fellowship: the deliverable is expected to leave the lab, and the ₹10 lakh grant exists so that the thing you built is not a figure in a thesis chapter.
If you are considering it
A ₹60,000 stipend with HRA is competitive with the national research fellowships. The industry stint is the part worth weighing hardest, because six months inside a company during a PhD changes what you can do afterwards, in either direction. Watch the council's portal for the call for applications and the eligibility conditions, which will specify which institutions and which stage of doctoral work qualify.
