Bihar raises PG medical and dental stipends; first-year residents now get ₹92,800 a month
Stipends in Bihar’s government colleges rise across all three years (₹92,800, ₹1.02 lakh and ₹1.12 lakh), backdated to 1 January 2026, as states compete to keep the specialists they train.
Bihar has revised the monthly stipend paid to postgraduate medical and dental students in its government colleges, with the new rates applying retrospectively from 1 January 2026.
The revised rates
| Year | Was | Now |
|---|---|---|
| First | ₹82,000 | ₹92,800 |
| Second | ₹90,200 | ₹1,02,000 |
| Third | ₹99,220 | ₹1,12,200 |
The stipend is payable for a maximum of twelve months a year, and unauthorised absence is deducted proportionately from that month’s payment.
Why a stipend line deserves this much attention
Because for three years it is the entire income of a doctor working hospital hours. A resident is not a student sitting in a lecture hall; they run wards, take night duties and carry real clinical load. What they are paid for it varies sharply between states, and far more sharply between government and private colleges, where delayed or simply unpaid stipends have driven repeated strikes and litigation.
So when you rank state-quota choices after NEET PG, put the stipend on the list beside the department’s reputation and case load. A college that pays late is telling you something about how it treats its residents generally.
State health minister Nishant Kumar framed the increase as financial support during training, noting that today’s PG students are the state’s future specialists. The revision lands alongside the National Medical Commission clearing two new medical colleges in Bihar. Capacity and retention are two halves of the same problem.
