Delhi University students’ union 2026: ABVP takes three posts, an independent wins vice-president
Yash Dabas is the new president of DUSU, winning by 2,053 votes. The vice-presidency went to independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen with the highest vote count of the election, and NOTA drew 23,942 votes across the four posts.
Counting for the Delhi University Students' Union concluded on 19 September 2026. Three of the four central posts went to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad; the vice-presidency went to an independent.
The results
- President: Yash Dabas (ABVP), 24,576 votes, defeating the National Students' Union of India's Vijay Shankar Meena (22,523) by 2,053 votes.
- Vice-President: Deepanshu Shokeen (Independent), 30,615 votes, ahead of Aranaya Singh Rathore (22,744) by 7,871, the highest individual tally of the election.
- Secretary: Riya Chhawdi (ABVP), 21,650, over the NSUI's Namrata Chaudhary (14,869).
- Joint Secretary: Lakshay Raj Singh (ABVP), 16,615, over independent Vishesh Yadav (15,778), by 837 votes.
Two numbers worth pausing on
NOTA polled 23,942 votes across the four posts, more than the winning candidate received for two of them. And an independent topped the poll for vice-president in an election usually read as a two-organisation contest. Taken together, that is a sizeable body of students declining the main slates.
The polling used about 1,000 electronic voting machines (960 deployed with 40 in reserve), with a large security deployment across the counting centres.
Why a union election carries weight here
DUSU represents students across dozens of colleges and a very large electorate, and its office-bearers negotiate on the things that shape daily student life: hostel capacity, fee revisions, examination scheduling, library and transport facilities, and safety on and around campus. It is also, historically, a training ground for national politics, which is why a contest for a students' union is reported like a general election.
