A fee appeal by St Xavier’s Loyola Hall in Ahmedabad has been rejected, and the school has been directed to refund roughly ₹2 crore of excess fees to parents.
The numbers
- Fee the school sought for its primary section: ₹39,359 a year.
- Fee approved by the Ahmedabad zone fee committee for 2024-25 and upheld on appeal: ₹26,250 a year.
- Excess collected from parents: about ₹2 crore, held in a fixed deposit while the appeal was pending, and to be refunded within a fortnight.
Why this matters beyond one school
Gujarat’s fee regulation machinery caps what a self-financed school may charge, zone by zone, and a school that collects above the approved figure while it appeals is holding money that is not yet its own. Parents at any school with a pending fee appeal are entitled to know what the approved fee is and what is being collected against it.
If you are comparing schools, ask for the fee committee’s approved figure in writing rather than the school’s own circular — the two are not always the same number.
