The National Medical Commission's state-wise seat matrix, as on 1 September 2026, gives Gujarat's medical capacity precisely. The state has 7,800 MBBS seats across 42 colleges, which places it seventh in the country.

The split

  • Government: 23 colleges, 4,250 seats — all renewed, zero added this year.
  • Private: 19 colleges, 3,550 seats — 3,300 renewed and 250 added.

So every seat Gujarat gained for 2026-27 is a private seat. For comparison, Karnataka added 350 government seats this year, Bihar 290, Andhra Pradesh 275 and West Bengal 475.

Where Gujarat's government seats sit

The matrix lists the intake college by college. The 250-seat colleges are B. J. Medical College Ahmedabad, Government Medical College Surat, Medical College Baroda and M. P. Shah Medical College Jamnagar. A large block of GMERS colleges — Dharpur Patan, Gandhinagar, Gotri Vadodara, Hadiyol Himmatnagar, Junagadh, Sola Ahmedabad, Vadnagar and Valsad — carry 200 seats each, as does Government Medical College Bhavnagar. The newer campuses at Navsari, Rajpipla, Morbi, Panchmahal Godhra and Porbandar are at 100 each.

That shape matches what the state admission committee's own round-2 data showed: the GMERS network, not the six old government colleges, is now where a mid-range Gujarat merit number actually converts into a seat.

What a Gujarat candidate should do with this

Gujarat's state-quota round 3 opens on 28 September and the last date to join is 14 October. Two things follow from the matrix. First, government-quota supply in Gujarat is flat this year, so the only thing that will move closing merit numbers deeper in round 3 is candidates leaving — which, as the committee's forfeiture lists showed, they do in large numbers. Second, if your realistic outcome is a private seat, the fee, not the merit number, is the decision you should be preparing for now.

One caveat the regulator prints itself: the seat matrix remains subject to revision as appeal committees decide pending cases. The national total has already moved since 1 September.
