IIT Gandhinagar signs with Gujarat ATS on security technology and research
The institute and the state’s Anti-Terrorism Squad have agreed to work together on technology-driven solutions to security problems, joint research and professional development, an unusual pairing of a campus lab with a field agency.
IIT Gandhinagar and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad signed a memorandum of understanding on 18 September 2026 to work together on advanced research, technological innovation, capacity building and professional development in security-related fields.
What the agreement covers
- Joint development of technology-driven solutions to critical security challenges.
- Bringing field expertise from the agency together with the institute's research capability.
- Professional development and capacity building for personnel.
The institute's director, Prof Rajat Moona, framed it as work that leaves the building: the partnership, he said, is about taking research and technology beyond the laboratory and connecting it with real-world needs.
Why a student should notice
Agreements like this are where an applied research agenda comes from. Security technology sits at the intersection of several things engineering students already study: digital forensics, cryptography and network security, signal and image processing, drones and counter-drone systems, sensors, and increasingly machine learning applied to detection problems. A campus with a standing agreement to work on real cases can offer project topics and datasets that an ordinary lab cannot.
The public announcement does not yet name specific courses, training programmes or student projects. If this is a direction you want, the practical move is to follow the institute's computer science and electrical engineering groups and its research-project listings, where the work surfaces first as summer internships and M.Tech and PhD topics rather than as a new degree.
