IIT Madras opens a ₹3.30 crore construction robotics lab with internships attached
A new laboratory for robotics and automation in construction and infrastructure has been inaugurated with corporate social responsibility support from an engineering and construction major, and includes curriculum input and internships.
A ₹3.30 crore Construction Robotics laboratory was inaugurated at IIT Madras on 22 September 2026, set up to accelerate research and industry application of robotics and automation in the construction and infrastructure sectors. It was established with corporate social responsibility support from Bechtel India, a global engineering, construction, procurement and project management firm.
What the partnership includes
- Joint research, consulting and technology development, with projects intended to produce research publications, patents, prototypes and industry demonstrations.
- Industry input into curriculum development: the company contributes to what is taught, not only to what is built.
- Mentorship by the company's professionals.
- Internship opportunities for selected candidates.
Why civil engineering students should pay attention
Civil engineering has spent a decade being the branch students take when they cannot get computer science, and the assumption behind that choice is that the work has not changed. It has. Construction is among the least automated large industries in the world, which is why it is now among the most actively automated: layout robots, autonomous earth-moving, drone-based progress monitoring, robotic rebar tying, 3D-printed structures.
A laboratory like this is where that work gets done in India, and the parts of the announcement a student should circle are the last two. A lab produces papers. Curriculum input, mentorship and internships produce jobs.
The wider pattern
This is the same shape as the semiconductor ecosystem taking form at Dholera, where a university has been brought in alongside the manufacturers specifically to build industry-ready talent. The lesson for students in both cases is the same: when an industry arrives in India at scale, the hiring pipeline is built through a small number of named academic partnerships, and the first cohorts through them are the ones with the least competition.
