Surat’s chip packaging plant goes commercial, and Gujarat’s engineering students should read the job list
A ₹868 crore semiconductor assembly, packaging and testing plant at Palsana began commercial production on 17 September, with capacity for over 103 crore chips a year. The hiring in an OSAT facility is broader than most students assume.
A semiconductor assembly, packaging and testing plant at Palsana in Surat began commercial production on 17 September 2026. The facility represents an investment of ₹868 crore and is built for a capacity of about 1,033 million chips a year, roughly 103 crore units. It was cleared by the Union Cabinet in May 2026 and carries a technology partnership with a Japanese semiconductor manufacturer.
What an OSAT plant actually does
OSAT stands for outsourced semiconductor assembly and test. The wafer is fabricated elsewhere; this is the stage where the die is packaged, connected and tested before it ships. The Surat plant's capabilities include SOIC and QFN packages and advanced integrated-circuit packaging, aimed at power electronics, analog ICs, automotive and electric vehicles, industrial automation, consumer electronics and power management.
The roles such a plant hires for
- Process and packaging engineers: typically electronics, electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, materials or chemical engineering.
- Test engineers: test program development, automated test equipment, yield analysis. Strong ground for electronics and communication graduates.
- Equipment and maintenance engineers: the machines are the plant, and keeping them inside tolerance is a career of its own.
- Cleanroom operators and technicians: a diploma and ITI route into the industry, which most degree-focused advice ignores.
- Quality, reliability and failure analysis: increasingly where the interesting work is, because automotive-grade parts have to survive conditions consumer parts never see.
How to prepare while you are still studying
Semiconductor manufacturing rewards specifics: a course in VLSI or microelectronics, hands-on exposure to testing and measurement, statistical process control, and comfort with cleanroom discipline. The national semiconductor mission funds skilling and training programmes attached to this build-out, and companies entering the sector have said they intend to work with educational institutions on hiring and training. Ask your placement cell about this now, not in your final semester.
