NIRF Medical ranking 2025: AIIMS and the top 50 medical colleges compared (MBBS seats, median salary, score)

All 50 medical colleges in the NIRF 2025 Medical ranking in one table: score, the five parameter scores, 2024 rank, MBBS and MD/MS intake, and the median salary each reported, from every institute's own NIRF PDF.

Medical students in white coats walking across an Indian medical college campus
NIRF ranked 50 medical institutions in 2025. AIIMS New Delhi is first; Gujarat's GCRI and B.J. Medical College are 44 and 45.

Quick answer (as of 2 November 2026): The latest NIRF Medical ranking is India Rankings 2025, released on 4 September 2025. NIRF 2026 is not on nirfindia.org yet. AIIMS New Delhi is first with a score of 91.80, then PGIMER Chandigarh (82.58), CMC Vellore (76.48), JIPMER Puducherry (73.30) and SGPGIMS Lucknow (70.09). NIRF ranked 50 of the 223 institutions that applied in Medical, and 7 of the 50 are AIIMS campuses. Two are in Gujarat: Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute at 44 and B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad at 45. B.J. Medical College was not in the 2024 table.

This page puts all 50 ranked medical institutions in one place: score, the five parameter scores, last year's rank, MBBS and MD/MS intake, and what happened to their last MBBS and MD/MS batches, including the median salary they reported. Every figure is copied from the NIRF 2025 Medical ranking page or from the institute's own data PDF on nirfindia.org, read on 2 November 2026. Each row links to its PDF.

Key takeaways

  • Top 5: AIIMS New Delhi 91.80, PGIMER Chandigarh 82.58, CMC Vellore 76.48, JIPMER 73.30, SGPGIMS Lucknow 70.09. The top three are in the same places as in 2024.
  • AIIMS: seven campuses are ranked. After New Delhi come Rishikesh (13), Bhubaneswar (14), Jodhpur (19), Bhopal (25), Patna (27) and Raipur (31).
  • MBBS seats: 44 of the 50 filed a UG 5-year (MBBS) intake. Together they report 8,755 seats for 2023-24. PGIMER, SGPGIMS, Sree Chitra, ILBS and GCRI file no UG 5-year (MBBS) intake, so a NEET UG rank cannot get you an MBBS seat there.
  • Gujarat: GCRI (44, up from 45) and B.J. Medical College (45, new). AIIMS Rajkot is not in the top 50.
  • Biggest climbs from 2024: King George's Medical University from 19 to 8, AIIMS Raipur from 38 to 31, ILBS from 34 to 28, Siksha 'O' Anusandhan from 21 to 15.
  • Salaries: NIRF reports the median salary of placed graduates, not the average. The middle value across the 45 MD/MS rows we could compare is ₹18 lakh a year (our calculation).

Is there a NIRF 2026 Medical ranking?

Not as of 2 November 2026. The nirfindia.org home page lists ranking years from 2016 to 2025, and the 2026 Medical ranking page does not exist yet. India Rankings 2025 came out on 4 September 2025 (IR 2025 report). The data behind it is for academic year 2023-24 and the batches that graduated by then. When NIRF publishes 2026, this table will need a fresh read.

NIRF Medical 2025: the full top 50

Score and rank are from the ranking page. The 2024 rank is from the 2024 Medical ranking page. The intake columns are the 2023-24 sanctioned (approved) intake from each institute's PDF: UG 5-year is the MBBS course, PG 3-year is mainly MD and MS. "New" means the institute was not in the 2024 table.

What moved since 2024

  • Up: King George's Medical University (19 to 8), AIIMS Raipur (38 to 31), ILBS (34 to 28), Siksha 'O' Anusandhan (21 to 15), AIIMS Bhopal (31 to 25), Datta Meghe (23 to 20).
  • Down: Madras Medical College (10 to 16), University College of Medical Sciences (32 to 38), VMMC and Safdarjung (17 to 22), NIMHANS (4 to 7).
  • New in the top 50: B.J. Medical College Ahmedabad (45), Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Belagavi (46), Chettinad Academy (49).
  • Dropped out of the table: Armed Forces Medical College (30 in 2024), Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram (42) and Pt. B.D. Sharma University of Health Sciences (50).

Scores near the bottom are close. Ranks 44 to 50 sit between 52.15 and 50.91, so a few tenths of a point move a college several places.

How the NIRF Medical score is built

NIRF scores every institute out of 100 on five parameters, then weights them. The weights for Medical are in NIRF's 2025 Medical methodology:

ParameterWhat it measuresWeight
TLR: Teaching, Learning and ResourcesStudent strength including PhD, MD, MS, DNB, MCh and DM students (20 marks), faculty to student ratio (30), faculty qualifications and experience (20), money spent (30)0.30
RPC: Research and Professional PracticePublications (40), quality of publications (40), patents (10), research projects and consultancy (10)0.30
GO: Graduation OutcomesPlacement and higher studies (25), university exam results (25), number of MD/MS/DNB graduates (30), number of DM/MCh graduates (20)0.20
OI: Outreach and InclusivityStudents from other states and countries (30), women students and faculty (30), students with full fee reimbursement (20), facilities for students with disabilities (20)0.10
PR: PerceptionA survey of employers, professionals and academics0.10

Worked example, AIIMS New Delhi: 0.30 × 93.51 (TLR) + 0.30 × 91.87 (RPC) + 0.20 × 98.28 (GO) + 0.10 × 65.34 (OI) + 0.10 × 100 (PR) = 91.80, the score on the ranking page.

How the NIRF Medical score is built: TLR 30 percent, RPC 30 percent, GO 20 percent, OI 10 percent, Perception 10 percent
Source: NIRF India Rankings 2025, Medical methodology (checked 2 November 2026).

Two things follow from these weights. First, research and postgraduate output count for a lot: RPC is 30% and a big part of GO is the number of MD, MS, DM and MCh graduates. That is why PGIMER and SGPGIMS rank near the top even though they file no MBBS intake. Second, perception is only 10%, but it separates the leaders. AIIMS New Delhi scores 100 on PR and CMC Vellore 83.74. Many private universities score below 20.

Note on low figures. Six values are below ₹2 lakh a year: the MBBS medians of Aligarh Muslim University (1.5), VMMC and Safdarjung (1.25) and Lady Hardinge (1.2), and the MD/MS medians of VMMC and Safdarjung (1.48), Lady Hardinge (1.5) and GCRI (1.7). They are printed this way in the PDFs, but they sit far under every other row, so ask the college what they mean before you compare them. "None placed" means the PDF shows 0 placed. "None filed" means the row shows 0 graduates.

How to read these numbers

  • Higher studies is the normal path after MBBS. At AIIMS New Delhi all 101 MBBS graduates of 2022-23 are listed under higher studies and none as placed. At Maulana Azad Medical College it is 240 of 250. A low "placed" count at a top government college usually means students went straight into postgraduate study, not that they found no work.
  • The MBBS median compares only the placed graduates. Among MBBS rows, the highest reported medians are BHU (₹18 lakh, 14 placed), Maulana Azad (₹15.23 lakh, 10 placed) and AIIMS Raipur (₹15 lakh, 62 placed). When only 10 or 14 students are counted, one or two salaries move the median a lot.
  • MD/MS medians are higher. The top MD/MS medians are ILBS (₹47 lakh, 16 graduates), SGPGIMS (₹30.5 lakh), Sree Chitra (₹28.8 lakh), JIPMER (₹26 lakh), and B.J. Medical College and Sri Ramachandra (₹25 lakh each).
  • NIRF does not define "placed" for doctors. The PDFs do not say whether a placement is a residency, a hospital job or something else. Read the salary column as what the college reported, not as an offer you will get.

Gujarat medical institutes in NIRF 2025

Two Gujarat institutes are in the NIRF 2025 Medical top 50, both in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI): rank 44, score 52.15 (rank 45 in 2024). GCRI has a very high teaching and resources score, TLR 88.71, tied with Madras Medical College for the fifth highest in the list. Its research (14.30) and perception (7.00) scores are low. GCRI has no MBBS course: its PDF lists a PG 3-year intake of 34 for 2023-24. In 2023-24, 21 PG students graduated, 15 were placed and 6 went to higher studies (GCRI NIRF data).

B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad: rank 45, score 51.84 (not in the 2024 table). Its graduation outcome score of 91.29 is the sixth highest of all 50, behind only AIIMS New Delhi, Madras Medical College, IPGME&R Kolkata, CMC Vellore and Sawai Man Singh Medical College. Its research score is low (12.42). The PDF lists:

  • UG 5-year (MBBS) intake 2023-24: 250
  • PG 3-year (MD/MS) intake 2023-24: 418
  • MBBS batch graduating 2022-23: 248 graduated, 70 placed, 170 in higher studies, median ₹12 lakh
  • MD/MS batch graduating 2023-24: 275 graduated, 130 placed, 120 in higher studies, median ₹25 lakh

Not in the top 50: no other Gujarat medical college is in the ranked list, including AIIMS Rajkot. NIRF publishes only the ranked institutions, so the ranking page does not show which other Gujarat colleges applied. For every medical college in the state, see medical colleges on CareerBox.

What this means for NEET UG 2027 aspirants

  • NIRF does not decide admission. An MBBS seat is allotted only on your NEET UG rank, through counselling. The Medical Counselling Committee (mcc.nic.in) runs the All India Quota and the deemed, central university, AIIMS and JIPMER rounds, and each state runs its own quota. In Gujarat that is ACPUGMEC (medadmgujarat.org). Our MBBS admission guide explains each route.
  • Cross out the postgraduate-only names. PGIMER, SGPGIMS, Sree Chitra, ILBS and GCRI have no MBBS intake, and NIMHANS's undergraduate courses are B.Sc. programmes (NIMHANS courses). That leaves 44 ranked institutions with MBBS seats.
  • Seat counts are small at the top. The seven AIIMS together filed 882 UG 5-year seats for 2023-24, and CMC Vellore and BHU 100 each. Many state and private colleges filed 250. These are NIRF filings for 2023-24; check the current seat matrix on mcc.nic.in or your state portal for the year you apply.
  • Look at the PG column too. If you plan to do MD or MS after MBBS, a college with a large PG 3-year intake trains more residents on the same campus. Sawai Man Singh Jaipur (638), Madras Medical College (615), Osmania (542) and AIIMS New Delhi (445) have the largest. For the PG stage, see our NEET PG counselling guide.
  • For Gujarat students, B.J. Medical College is the state's only MBBS college in the NIRF top 50, with 250 UG seats filed for 2023-24.
  • Dates: NTA had not announced the NEET UG 2027 exam date as of 2 November 2026. Our NEET UG 2027 guide tracks it, and the official source is neet.nta.nic.in. See also the NEET UG exam page and the MBBS course guide.

What these figures do not tell you

  • Fees are not in the NIRF data. The PDFs report spending and student counts, not tuition fees. Fees for government, private and deemed seats are in the counselling information bulletins and the college prospectus.
  • The data is filed by the institutes. NIRF publishes what each institute submitted. We copied it as printed and did not audit it.
  • One batch each. The MBBS outcome is the 2022-23 batch and the MD/MS outcome the 2023-24 batch. Small batches swing from year to year.
  • A rank covers the whole institution. NIRF does not rank departments or say anything about your chance of a seat.
